Lobster Fishing – Documentary Film on DVD

lobster fishing

Lobster fishing is one of the largest industries in the Clare area and has been for many years. The exportation of lobster from the Saint Mary’s Bay area began in 1872 to be exact. In the beginning the abundance of fish, lobster, scallops etc. made it easier for fishermen of all types to provide food for their families. Back then lobster wasn’t a profitable business as it is today. In the 1930s, lobster sold for only cents per pound. Also, when my grandfather began lobster fishing back in the late 1920s, he didn’t have fancy equipment to pull up traps from the ocean floor. He had to pull up all his traps by hand! Of course there wasn’t sets of trawls back then, traps were set as singles or doubles, but still. You simply did not mess around with those guys …

In 1968, my grandfather (at 58yrs old) passed on the tradition of lobster fishing to his son (my father), and he has been fishing ever since. Just recently my father has upgraded his fishing vessel to a high speed 45 footer. It has a 450hp Volvo engine propelling the boat at 20knots (full speed). It may not sound like much speed but one must realize that the vessel is 45ft long! The boat has all the latest technology used by lobster fisherman today such as: Hydraulic hauler, Depth sounder, GPS, Radar, Auto pilot system, Power Steering, … Since I have chosen to go astray from my ancestors and choose a different profession, I felt it essential to make a documentary on my father’s hard job, so that my descendants and people around the world may see how a lobster fisherman earns a living.

Also, you will see a few pictures at the end of the video showing myself (11yrs old) holding a 65lb Cod! You simply don’t see that sized fish anymore. As you’ll see in this video, there are several scenes with very large lobsters, you never know maybe someday they won’t exist anymore.
